It’s almost Christmas and we are so excited! I created a list of 12 Activities for 12 Days of Christmas so we will be ready to celebrate the whole season! I hope this list of simple yet festive activities is a great sounding board for you as well.
Did you know that the 12 Days of Christmas are the days from Christmas until the Epiphany of the Lord? Popular culture (especially advertisements) would have us believe that the 12 days of Christmas are the days leading up to Christmas. But we are still in the final days of Advent, joyfully anticipating Christmas.
I know every family is different, but we are so excited and have a hard time holding off entirely on Christmas music, etc., especially this year. But as we form and grow our little domestic church, I am trying to be intentional about making Advent and Christmas two distinct seasons in our home, just as they are in the Catholic Church. We are very eagerly awaiting Christmas for more music, cookie baking, and placing baby Jesus in the nativity scene, just to name a few ideas. One thing that has made this much easier this Advent is the amazing resource box we purchased from the Catholic Family Crate.
But, I want to keep this post short and sweet! So let’s get to the fun stuff shall we? Here is a list of 12 Activities for 12 Days of Christmas for kids! Now, if it intimidates you to do twelve days worth of activities, I totally hear you! Trust me, the activities on this list generally don’t take a lot of preparation. If we are going to do a craft, I need it to be straightforward and the supply list to be short and already on hand.
12 Activities for 12 Days of Christmas
Christmas cookies – AIP sugar cookies. This is our current favorite AIP, paleo sugar cookie recipe and what is Christmas without sugar cookies?
Christmas Movie – Oh Holy Night, The King is born: What Christmas is all about by Brother Francis from Formed. We will be using the free 7 day trial available on Formed to watch this. But, another movie you should be able to find for free is If you Give a Mouse a Christmas Cookie Movie. It’s my back up since Josephine is familiar with a few of the books. Please note: I have not watched either of these movies in full. I viewed snippets of each and read reviews.
Gingerbread house – We will be using this recipe to make a festive gingerbread house that is also gluten free, AIP, and Paleo friendly. I think Josephine is the perfect age to begin this fun tradition!
Nativity popsicle stick craft – it is exactly as it sounds! An easy, fun craft focusing on the reason for the season! I have a few ideas saved on my Pinterest board or you can do a search and plenty more pop up.
Christmas cookies – Paleo, AIP Spritz Cookies. If you receive my newsletter, then you already know I love this simple yet delicious cookie recipe. Don’t let the “spritz” part intimidate you if you don’t have a cookie press. I use a cookie scoop and flatten them bit with my hand. Sometimes we add sprinkles or chocolate chips, too.
Snow day – I use this to make snow in less then a minute. Simply fill the sensory table for winter play! In southeast Texas, we have to create our own snow!
The Star movie – This adorable movie follows the story of a small, brave donkey who ends up being an accidental hero as he and other animal characters follow the Star to Bethlehem the very first Christmas. Josephine is looking forward to watching it again during Christmastide. I enjoy it too! It’s a great family movie for young children.
Christmas cookies – Paleo, AIP friendly Chocolate Chip Cookies. We truly love my chocolate chip cookie recipe and make these regularly. Since we took a break to enjoy some other Christmas classics, it’s time for the ultimate classic cookie to return.
Christmas music dance party + optional Christmas craft – Not much of an explanation needed here. Search my Pinterest board for tons of easy crafts!
Hot chocolate + optional Christmas craft – We will be using hot coconut milk, maple syrup, and cocoa powder. Perhaps I need to get a Paleo hot chocolate recipe posted soon with exact measurements! 🙂
Star ornament craft – Again, I will be turning to Pinterest. I am choosing a star on this day since the Epiphany of the Lord is traditionally celebrated on December 6th.
Christmas water beads – Water beads are always a hit! And I still have plenty of Christmas ones leftover from last year because these water bead bags last forever! The hardest part is remembering to soak them in water a few hours ahead of playing.
Bonus idea – read one Christmas book together each day!
